3,109 Kilometers of New Lines and Over 50 New Stations Put into Operation for the First Time During the Spring Festival Travel Rush

This year’s Spring Festival holiday lasts nine days. Travel demand for returning home to visit family and for tourism is expected to be stronger. During the Spring Festival travel rush, railway passenger trips are projected to reach 540 million, with both the overall scale and single-day peak expected to exceed the highest levels recorded in the same period in history. To ensure smooth operations during the Spring Festival travel rush, railway authorities have prioritized capacity support and adopted multiple measures to meet the travel needs of the public.

During this year’s Spring Festival travel rush, 22 new lines totaling 3,109 kilometers, including the Xi’an-Yan’an High Speed Railway and the Baotou-Yinchuan High Speed Railway, as well as more than 50 passenger stations, were put into operation for the first time. Railway authorities have added and optimized more than 560 passenger trains to facilitate travel for people along the routes.

Prior to the Spring Festival travel rush, railway authorities put 251 EMU trainsets into operation in a concentrated manner to enhance transport capacity. On the premise of ensuring safety, maintenance schedules on certain high-speed railway lines were adjusted. Nearly 1,000 night high-speed railway trains were operated along major trunk corridors such as the Beijing-Guangzhou Railway and the Beijing-Shanghai High Speed Railway. On peak passenger flow days, railway authorities can arrange the operation of more than 14,000 passenger trains, with seating capacity increasing by 5.3 percent year on year.

In addition, railway authorities are striving to meet new consumption demands. Actively adapting to changes such as combined “family visits + tourism” travel patterns, capacity has been increased in a timely manner toward popular destinations centered on new hotspots such as intercity travel, ice and snow tourism, and island tourism, thereby enriching service offerings.
